my supervisor told me to stop working so quickly or else i wouldn't have any work left to do, sooooo.
hello all!
I have only coffee and sugar (from donuts) in my system and I feel like I'm going to hurl. I kind of want to, but I don't want some random lady walking into the bathroom and thinking "wow that bitch has an eating disorder." Ughhh decisions decisions.
We only have internet explorer so I can't tell when I spell something wrong! Uncool!
There is a program on this computer that blocks e-mail/facebook/4chan, but not livejournal, so it is still within my power to waste absurd amounts of time.
One really awesome thing about Atlanta-- since it has so many black people, the make-up CVS/the supermarket stocks reflects the different shades of brown, as opposed to Sarasota (and shit, even my part of Miami), where there's a ton for white people and like, a shade of beige (they are 'avin' a laugh at my expense, it seems). But here I can find the appropriate shade and it feels good.
ughhhh I'm gonna have to re-consider throwing up, I feel like shit. Ugh who am I kidding, I will not throw up and I'll just think about Torchwood the rest of the day (I'm halfway through the second episode, man oh man).

My life so far:
-I tried gouging part of a sweet potato out with my nails (don't ask) and I instead nearly ripped my thumb nail out. I could FEEL IT SEPARATE EWWWWW. I have had nail polish on the whole time though, so idk if it's any weird color. I kind of want to take it off but I'm scared.
-The people at the office are very nice and keep giving veiled references to "oh...so are you thinking about staying?" Like, wot, I've been here for two weeks, let's chillax.
-90% cocoa chocolate is actually very smooth and not at all bitter. I think it's my favorite so far.
-If I had a nickel for every variation of "hey girl r u spanish" I've heard in Atlanta I'd have a handful of nickels. It's weird being ~*exotic~*.
-There's a new man in my life-- he's called pastrami and swiss on rye and I'm pretty sure I'm going to marry him.
ughhhhhhhh my nail hurts when I touch it.

Things with From Russia With Love worked out, because we just don't really hang out in the same room anymore (so problems can't start yay!). ~*Hurrah solving problems like adults.
On the crowded train today, there was an older lady reading the kind of romance novel with a shirtless buff dude on the cover where you KNOW it was all sex scenes. I looked over at her and I was not even close to laughing or making fun of her, and I was like "Man, I'm all mature and shit, letting people get whatever enjoyment they want out of life, because really, who am I to judge her?" BUT THEN, she put a finger in her mouth and she started to breathe hard and I wanted to bust out laughing. lol nevermind! I wish I didn't care as much as she did to just read porn on people-filled trains. Such courage is not as spectacular as rescuing a bus filled with orphans from a bay or anything, but it's courage nonetheless, you know? Well, now you do.
OH, and the postcards in Atlanta suck. It takes itself too seriously, it does not have the saucy irreverence of Miami or other coastal cities because all of the cards are of stadiums and state facts and Martin Luther King Jr. As much as I like those things, I also like pictures of people in swimsuits with corny ass captions, and I like the latter MUCH MORE on my postcards. ughhh georgia you are failing me!
Anyway, I don't think I mentioned it here, but almost a year ago I had an "incident" with my dad and I decided to cut him from my life. He calls every so often but it's never something I initiate. The last time I saw him, he was driving through Sarasota in May so he stopped to see me and gave me a check for 200 dollars. Now, I am in college so I certainly appreciate the idea of it, but...it's from him and at this point, I'd rather eat glass than take anything from him. So the check has been there burning a hole in my wallet because I never got around to cashing it or ripping it up. BUT I CAME UP WITH A GOOD PLAN-- I WILL cash it, goddamnit, and I'll donate it to something he'd TOTALLY hate. Because if I'm not going to benefit from the money, someone out there should. Now I just need to come up with a shortlist of charities...

Ripping off Aaron's post:
a) You've been going a week with 4-5 hours of sleep a night. Today, you wake up with slight chest pains. What is a good idea?
1- go to the doctor 2- take it easy, it's been a stressful week 3- eat some greasy ass food
b) Ok, you're back home. What to do you do now?
1- time to nap, it's a three day weekend 2- putter about, I caught my second wind 3- go workout. You ate some greasy ass food, fatty!
There is no right answer, but I'm pretty sure 3 for a and 2/3 for b are the wrong ones. g2g, I'll be up at the gym. Hopefully I won't have a HNNNNNNNNNG moment.

With that said the guy weighing the bags was really nice and let me get away with a pound over the limit. BLESS THE WORLD.

I'm using my ~*700th~* entry on LJ to inform the world that I've seen Star Trek a second time and that I enjoyed it immensely a second time.
As you were.
ps-- you can leave your address in the last entry if you want a postcard from Atlanta. It will be written and sent with love, I assure you.

Also, tell me this f-list:
Would you like a humorous/tacky postcard from Atlanta? Well, would you?
If you answered yes, kindly leave your name + address in this post and I expect to receive something sometime this summer (I am just sooo precise!).
Don't worry it'll be screened, no one will get yer info here.

I've been raiding my mom's closet for professional looking clothes and it feels like the part in What Not to Wear where the person goes out shopping. I half expected Stacy and Clinton to show up and rip ugly shit out of my hands (because my mom had some ick nast stuff in there, ngl). But she also had ultra-nice stuff and I took it. So now I have three nice pairs of pants and a suit.
Good god I feel old all of a sudden.

[31 May 2009|08:13pm] |
I'm pretty much a beast at shopping. I got a sick dress from UO for ten dollars, and I got sick houndstooth Steve Madden shoes for 15 dollars, and it matches with this supercute houndstooth dress I got at school. This outfit is ridiculous. REEDEECULUSSSSS. Pictures will be forthcoming when I wear it.
I haven't updated with any movie reviews lately because I like doing them in groups of ten and I hadn't seen anything in so long I was worried my shitty useless goal of seeing 100 new movies in 2009 would not be attained. And then in this last week I saw seven movies and it seems like I'm almost back on track. HOORAY for useless yet attainable yet somewhat challenging goals.
30. Married to the Mob-- idk kind of...boring(?) when Michelle Pfeiffer wasn't around. 31. A Star is Born--DEAR LORD. JUDY GARLAND IS A QUEEN. There is no question after this movie. What an overwhelmingly talented individual. This is her masterpiece and it is a doozy. See it see it see it see it. 32. Fauberg 36-- Eh. A cute little nothing of a movie. It's set in Paris during the mid-30s and it was fun seeing it with a historian's eye (because I took a ~*french history~ class, doncha know), and there were some genuinely moving parts, but ultimately I didn't get that invested in the outcome. whatevs. 33. Doubt-- Eh. Meryl Streep was pretty good, and tbh, so was everyone else, but this was another thing were I really didn't care about the outcome, so when it came around it was like "ok". 34. Coffy-- But don't think I'm a hater all the time! Coffy was fantastic! I feel the same as when I saw Sword of Doom, and I suddenly understood Quentin Tarantino SO MUCH MORE. And just the pleasure of seeing Pam Grier shoot some motherfuckers is enough to give this my full-fledged support. 35. Foxy Brown-- I didn't like this one as much as Coffy. But that's like me saying I don't like waffles as much as pancakes, HEY, waffles are still DELICIOUS. A Coffy/Foxy Brown double feature drinking game would make my life and/or give me alcohol poisoning. 36. I've Loved You So Long-- Good. I wanted to see this for a while, and it was good. Slow as fuck, but in a nice, meant to be slow way, instead of where a movie's slow and it's clear it was just screenwriter/director ineptitude. It was definitely Kristen Scott Thomas's movie, but the sister was really good too. 37. Deathwatch-- ugh so disappointing. I think I'm most disappointed because it was SUCH a good idea. It was a psychological horror set in the trenches of World War I. Now I am in LOVE with shit about World War I, and the idea was so so good. But it was just done so poorly. Like, I could anticipate the plot and who would get killed off and blah. I want to redo it myself. 38. Ballad of a Soldier-- omg, I cried. I KNOW, ME. I have no heart and I was moved to fucking tears. I think it bears thinking about how countries thought of World War II. In America, the idea conveyed in school is mostly (but not totally) "HECK YEAH FREEIN ~*DA WORLD~*", and in France it is looking at being conquered and collaboration vs. resistance and how the two met, and in Britain it's getting the fuck beat out of you but standing strong, but Russia? Fucking a, the Soviet Union had the most casualties period, more than 20 million civilians and soldiers dead. One million died in Leningrad alone. And so with the Russian movies I've seen, it's just so fucking sad because they are truthful, and in their experience so many people died the specter of death hung over them like no other country, and it's just amazing to see these movies made in the 50s/60s that are just so anti-war while thinking about how the US and USSR governments were just pushing each other and threatening much worse than what they dealt with. But this movie was just incredibly touching and well-made, and some of the camera shots were just so effective, and I'd put it up there with Cranes are Flying. Seriously. 39. Star Trek-- FUCK YEAR. SOOOOO GOOD. It was so hyped up and I only just saw it yesterday and it TOTALLY lived up to the hype. Whatever, if you've seen it/want to see it, you know what's up, and if you don't want to see it, I'm sure there's nothing coherent I could say to make you want to see it. 40. Up-- I just saw this now with my little brother. With Pixar it's like "will I like this or will I love it" and now I liked it a lot but I think if I see it again I'd love it, it was very subtle and needs a little time to sink in. The love story was beauuuuutiful and I WANT MY OWN CARL ;_;. Russell totally reminds me of my little brother so they did a good job with a 8/9/10 year old boy who actually acts like one. And then finding Captain Ahab in the jungle (that's totally what I call him in my head, lol)? TOO COOL.
Oh, and the soundtracks to both Star Trek and Up make me want to have some of Michael Giacchino's babies. They are both so good! Last night I totally came straight to my computer and downloaded the Star Trek soundtrack, and now I'm going to look around for Up's. The music for both was insanely perfect.

Jessica, Monica and I all applied together to work at the soon to be opened Anthropologie in Aventura. It would be so cool if we all got hired!
Ok, time to lie back and finish digesting. I honestly think snakes are on to something, when they eat a bunch and then just laze about.
OH, and I got a ~*flannel~* shirt from Urban Outfitters for five dollars. I've wanted one for a while and when they became a trend again I was like, "COOL, now it'll be easy to get one" but then they've all been kind of expensive, so this is wonderful news for my cheap ass. Wonderful wonderful wonderful.

Not all of my evals are up, but:
Course Description: This course surveyed the major themes and issues in American environmental history from 1492-Present. Topics included: the different modes of production and reproduction that have shaped the North American environment over time, the position the state has played in structuring the American environment, and the role that culture has played in shaping Americans’ perceptions of, and relationships to, their various environments.
Overall Evaluation: You stood out in this class, Gisselle. Your midterm and final showed thorough mastery of the material we covered; you were an extremely bright contributor to class discussions; and your final project on public perceptions of the passenger pigeon was excellent. Super work. It was nice having you in the class.
1. Midterm: This is an excellent test, Gisselle. You show a distinct ease with the material. Each of your responses to the prompts seizes on the important concepts we’ve addressed and each provides us with the type of historical detail needed to support the arguments made. A thoughtful exam. Landscapes of Domination and Resistance: Good response. You picked out the key aspects of Stewart’s argument regarding planter and slave perceptions of the low country rice regions. Ecological Imperialism: Very good response. This identification is also well done. You identify the main insight of Crosby’s article and you give us convincing examples to show how an ecological perspective on conquest revises the story considerably. Bison Ecology: Excellent response. You summarize Flores’ argument very well. The only qualification I’d make is that Flores suggests that the bison population was variable and that Plains peoples who adopted the horse were likely headed into a long-term resource problem. The Wilderness Concept: Good work. You explain Cronon’r argument very well and select out its key insights. I am especially interested in the way he reorients us back to the main concern of the course – how to use the environment responsibly rather than merely set it aside for preservation. Essay Response: Your essay assessing Cronon’s indictment of capitalism for environmental degradation in the colonial period gives us a clear sense of his position and its weaknesses. You show us that regional differences mattered and that practice of subsistence farming implies a very different story than he gives us. Good work.
2. Writing Assignment #1: Primary Document Analysis Very nice work. Your analysis is sharp; you’ve located very interesting sources; and your proposed project sounds quite promising, assuming you have continued luck finding such great sources.
3. Final Examination: This is a superlative test, Gisselle. Your main essay on conservation and environmental justice takes us through the history of the environmental movement and the debates within it in a punctilious and analytically sharp way. Your command of the material both historically and conceptually is superior. Your two IDs are full-bodied. You clearly understood the concept of Fossil Fuel Acreage and Pollan's critique of Nutritionism and you placed both within the larger historical context of the course. Excellent work.
4. Writing Assignment #2: The Passenger Pigeon in Field and Stream Gisselle this is a very sharp research project. You identified a useful set of primary documents from Field and Stream and you reconstructed a meaningful account of the ways in which hunters regarded the passing of the passenger pigeon and their own participation in its demise. You read your sources well and you put them into dialogue with several of the course themes, such as Cronon's discussion of the wilderness sublime. You might have done a bit more to give us the basic historical context (i.e. what was the market in pigeons?) but this is a fine short research project. Excellent work.
5. Participation: Gisselle, you were one of a few core contributors to our discussions. You routinely added bright insights to our discussions and you had a superior mastery of the material on a weekly basis.
